Soldiers Pass & Devils Bridge Hike

This was the first day of our 3 day Jeep rental! Have you ever gone off-road in a Jeep or any other ATV? We haven’t before today! SOOO much fun! We actually own a Jeep that we keep in North Carolina, so you KNOW what we’ll be doing there! 
Our first destination was Soldier’s Pass Trailhead # 66. Keep in mind that it’s very dry in Sedona, so lots of dust everywhere as we rode on the trail. It was a 1.7 mile ride in to Devil’s Kitchen and the sinkhole. Devil’s Kitchen, is a large active sinkhole that has most recently collapsed in 1995. Sinkholes are most commonly created when rainwater dissolves the limestone beneath the surface, and the caves that are slowly created collapses suddenly. The sinkhole is about 150 feet in length and 50 feet down to the bottom. If you hike beyond Devil’s Kitchen there are the Seven Sacred Pools and a cave. We didn’t make it to those since we were not familiar with the whole trail. When we return to Sedona, we will definitely take in the entire hike to experience them as well.
In keeping with the “Devil” theme, our next destination was Devil’s Bridge, Trail # 120. This is a heavily visited trail because people want to take a picture on the Devil’s Bridge. We drove in as far as we could, and then hiked the rest of the way. It was a great hike and rated “moderate”. Devils Bridge is the largest natural sandstone arch located in the Sedona area of Coconino National Forest. Once we got to the base of the bridge, we continued up a natural rock staircase that has beautiful views. We reached another level of stairs which took us up to the bridge. Since this is a “tourist” attraction hike, the line to get a photo of ourselves on the Devil’s Bridge was crazy long. We waited for a bit and then realized it was probably an hour wait to make our way to the “photo op” on the bridge. The nice thing is that people in line were very willing to take the photos for you on your phone. We decided to pass on the “Kodak moment” and hiked back down.
