Carlsbad, New Mexico

Monday May 3 – Wednesday May 5 2021

The first big destination on our trip was Carlsbad, New Mexico which is in the southern part of the state. Have you ever been to New Mexico? A LOT of dust, everything is brown and VERY dry. We stayed at a traditional RV park, Carlsbad RV Park. It’s a very large park with gravel sites. All of the roads in the park are gravel (which is fine…way better than dirt) and there were a couple of little grassy spots for the dogs. The park only had a few RVs, so it was obviously not their “prime season”. It is very convenient to Carlsbad Caverns, which was our main purpose for going to Carlsbad. The reason we opted to go in early May was to miss the heat of the summer, and that part worked out great!

On Tuesday, May 4th we went to Carlsbad Caverns. It was absolutely AMAZING!  Definitely put it on your list! We opted to take the elevator down to the caves which is 750’ down and the temperature was 56 degrees…so nice and refreshing! There were different trails and we walked all of them. Each area was such a different experience. At first the caves were large and all different sizes and shapes with huge stalagmite and stalactite formations that were spectacular! As we began it felt like we were on the moon with the huge expansive shapes, ”rooms”, and crevices. Then it felt like we were in an enchanted forest…seriously that’s what it felt like and you could swear you could see little trees and figures. And then BAM…there it was…a sign in one of those sections that said “Fairyland Popcorn covered stalagmites”!

As we continued our trek through the caves, we even saw a formation that looked like a bearded character!

So many marvels down there!  Enjoy all of the pictures!
